If you’re like most people, you’ve only thought about how much water damage might be present in your home only after you’ve realized that damage has occurred. And while it’s always a good idea to be proactive when there are erosion and drainage problems around your living space, it’s okay to admit that you don’t regularly think about the importance of interior and exterior basement waterproofing.
But if damage has already occurred, you need to call in the experts and have them fix it — fast. Not only does water damage have the ability to cause home structural failure, but it poses a serious health risk for your family and pets living inside (even when the home is in no danger of collapsing). Even after the walls appear to dry, it is not uncommon for mold to start growing inside the walls where you can’t see it. And when mold starts growing, that’s bad news.
Extended exposure to mold growths — like the ones that come from water damage — can lead to very serious health concerns for both humans and animals. Allergic reactions and respiratory problems are often connected to being in environments where mold is present, and these health problems aren’t easy to get rid of.
The scary part is that you may not even realize that your house has water damage (especially if you aren’t the original owner). Anyone living in particularly flood prone areas is likely to stay wary of homes that have experienced water damage, but many people outside of these areas forget that water damage can occur anywhere. So make sure to give your house a double check the next time you have a few spare minutes — and if you see any signs of possible water damage, don’t hesitate to call in the professionals.
